reflections on oral presentations

First,a sidenote to my group: we survived it! and i think overall, we did fine.
Divya: I think you make a good presenter as you were so natural and assertive. You displayed confidence and fluency throughout your whole part, and the most amazing part was you did it without any scripts!

Xian Rui: your voice projection was great and i feel that you have shown marked improvement in terms of presentation.

Shiting: i think you did well because you presented more fluently than during our numerous practices, and this was great!

Cheers to all. Thanks for all the hard work.

Personally, i think my voice projection was overall loud and clear. However, i stumbled over quite a few words during the presentation and that made my presentation less fluent.I guess nervousness played a part in that and this is something i should take note of and improve on. Also, i think having to rely on the scripts was also something i could work on. Having said so, when i think back on the peer teaching and compare it to the oral presentation done, to see if i have improved, i thought the feeling of nervousness this time was lesser and eye contact with the audience was also more frequent, though i think i could have better engagement with the audience. Also, i feel that dressing really does play a part, with a more formal dressing, i maintain a more formal posture which affects the confidence that i display.

last, i think this oral presentation was a great experience in allowing me to practice my oral presentations and i would definitely need more learning experiences so as to be a better presenter in future.

  1. Hey Germaine,

I thought your presentation was very loud and clear. Moreover, you had good posture and pronunciation of the words. Moreover, I felt your visual slides were effective in bringing across your points.

I think that you can improve on your presentation by refering less to the slides and the notes. This was rather distracting, as our eyes would follow your movements too.

However, overall i think it was a good job! :)

  3. Hey Germaine,

Thank you very much. And yes we all survived. You presented very well too and I think drawing parallels using the video worked very well. You captured the attention of the audience and showed what an important role teachers can play in students' lives. You did not really stumble as you mentioned. You sounded confident and fluent.

No worries. Hope this OP helped prepare you for all the numerous presentations you may have to make as a teacher. All the best!

  4. Hi Germaine,

The minor weakness during the presentation that you have is your depandence on cue cards. I understand that it can be rather challenging as the slides are not prepared using the conventional way of bullets and tables. But, I feel that this is really a good starting point to effective presentation.

Overall, I feel that you did a great job, being the first female speaker in your group:)

    Cheers,
    Serene

  5. haha divya, thanks for your comments in giving me reassurance.yes, i think i learnt alot from you people, and thought the whole process with working you guys was very enjoyable. As this module comes to the end, all the best! and keep in touch(fb?) haha..

keethani and serene: thanks for the positive comments:) yes, i should have done without the cue cards. haha, its strange, i think i do know the content i was going to present pretty well, but when there's cue cards, it just makes you want to rely on them (something to fall back on) and i think the next time i do a presentation, shall try believing in myself more and do without them.

  6. Hi Germaine,

I think you are right to say you were a bit nervous at the beginning of your presentation given that you were the first speaker. However, i believe that you eventually steadied yourself as you went deeper into your presentation slides.

Your voice projection was great with good attempts at maintaining eye contact with each and everyone of the audience. Nonetheless, I agree with the rest that you have a tendency to take a peek at your cue cards every now and then during your presentation. (I am not too sure whether it's just a habitual gesture or you actually referred to them)

All in all, save for a few minor halting speeches, you have done pretty well and have improved from your peer teaching presentation previously.

    See you in class,
    Kenny
